Afternoon tea with a difference – The Hyatt & Amala spa, Birmingham

Everyone loves afternoon tea. That’s a fact. There is a lot to love about dainty finger sandwiches, petite cakes, scones layered with jam and cream all perfectly accompanied by a pot of tea.

The Hyatt in Birmingham are taking their fabulous afternoon tea to the next level… sneakily throwing in a pamper session in their luxurious spa as well. Everyone loves a day at a health spa, that’s also a fact. So this is a winning combination right from the start.

The Hyatt’s City Escape spa day includes a full day lording around their Amala Spa and Club in a fluffy white gown and slippers. You can relax in the bubbling whirlpool, sweat out your toxins in the sauna, beautify your skin in the steam room or take a leisurely swim in the heated pool. To top off your day perfectly you’ll receive a complimentary 30-minute treatment followed by a full afternoon tea!

I love nothing more than a luxurious spa day and have been lucky enough, through my job, to visit many up and down the UK. However, I have to say I was honestly really impressed with the Hyatt’s package –  you receive all of the above for only £55 per person. You wouldn’t even get a treatment in most places for that price. Seriously.

Don’t worry though, just because you’re getting amazing value for money nothing is less than superb.

Spa Day:

For my treatment I chose a 30-minute classic manicure in the Orly nail bar. You even get a miniature nail varnish of your choice to take home with you, to top up your colour when you wish.

There treatment list is impressive with facials, scrubs, peels, hot stone and candle oil massages. I absolutely love the sound of their signature Turkish Hamman treatments – a traditional Hammam ritual with honey, royal jelly and argan oil. Also a steam exfoliation, cleansing clay wrap and a white honey face mask. I can just imagine how utterly amazing this treatment smells. If you’ve had a Turkish bath or scrub before, you’ll know exactly how incredible this would be.

After my manicure I headed to the whirl pool for a relax and a quick dip in the pool. You’ll find circular cabanas and hanging chairs dotted around the poolside for you to relax and snooze away on.

Afternoon Tea:

The Hyatt’s afternoon tea takes place upstairs in their Aria restaurant – a beautiful, sun-soaked, glass atrium. It is serene, yet cozy.

With fairy lights entwined around large indoor trees and carefully placed, hanging bird cages this lobby area is the ideal space for a lazy afternoon feast.

A polished, grand piano sits invitingly at the bottom of the spiral stair case, while the calming sound of flowing water from the ornate fountain echos the room. It’s hard to believe you’re just a stone’s throw from bustling Broad Street.

As expected the lavish afternoon tea is as much of a feast for your eyes as it is for your taste buds.

As well as the lemon and poppy seed scones (they do fruit and plain too) the roast courgette and hummus finger sandwich were a highlight for me on the savoury front.

All of the miniature cakes were a taste sensation and deserve recognition in their own right…

A mixed berry creme patissiere tart, a grapefruit cheesecake sitting proudly upon a spoon, an elderflower and apple syllabub served in a shot glass, a coconut blackberry and lime sponge and most people’s pièce de résistance – a dark chocolate delice.

Absolutely divine – we had quite a few cakes left over so boxed them up to take home. Bonus!

I can’t shout about this luxurious day out in Birmingham enough, seriously, my friends are sick of me banging on about how much you get for fifty five pounds. Maybe I just need to get out more often?
